When running a business, whether that be a small start-up or a big corporate giant, you need to think about your marketing activities. In this article, I’m going to go over 10 simple marketing tips that you can use, in order to help boost your business.

Is Your Website Up To Scratch?

Having a good quality website, that complies with all the latest web standards, does not only look good to potential customers, it will also help your search engine rankings. When ranking a website in its search results, Google looks through the website to make sure it meets website standards. If your website does not work well on mobile, or is slow to load, or has a bad HTML structure, Google (amongst other search engines) will penalise you for this.

SEO

Being found in search engines for a particular keyword, can be a great way of generating new business. Optimizing your website for search engines is an on-going task. If you use WordPress, I would fully recommend installing the Yoast SEO plugin. This plugin will help you gear the content of your website up towards a particular subject, in a way that is preferred by search engines. If you have the budget, it may also be worth getting an SEO expert to audit your website.

Get Out There

Most of my marketing tips, revolve around some kind of digital activity, however, physically networking with people is also great for generating new leads and contacts. Get yourself to some networking events, take a load of business cards and mingle. I would suggest that you attend a mixture of events, some specific to your industry, and some that you think your potential clients will attend.

Content Marketing

Content marketing is the marketing and business process for creating and distributing relevant and valuable content to attract a clearly defined and understood target audience. In other words, creating new content for your target market on a regular basis can help to attract new leads. This is done by establishing yourself as an industry expert, via the content you produce. The two most common ways of doing this are by maintaining a blog and a YouTube channel. Distributing new content across social media will help you to reach a larger market, but will also aid you in your SEO efforts… so make sure to share your new content across all your profiles.

Build Up An Email List

Email marketing is the targeting of potential customers through email. Email marketing is one of the most effective ways of generating new business and leads. Not long ago, I wrote a post on how to get more email subscribers, which goes over some of the most effective ways of building up your list.

Show Off Your Testimonials

Testimonials are a great way of building trust with potential clients. By clearly displaying testimonials, especially by influential individuals, you are confirming to your potential clients that you are good at what you do. Getting testimonials can be tough, but if you simply ask your client to provide you with a testimonial, you might be surprised at just how willing people are to help (assuming you have done a good job for them).

Be Helpful

This is the most simple of my marketing tips, just be helpful. If you are helpful to your potential clients, by providing them with advice and tips to help them succeed, you will find that this could put you in their mind when they actually need your services. I should mention however, you don’t want to be ‘too helpful’, meaning don’t give away your services for free 🙂

Don’t Neglect Your Social Accounts

People like to consume content, be it video content, blog posts, images or books. Social media has made it much easier for people to consume new content every day, and sharing content for your potential clients to consume is a great way of building up a relationship. I wrote a blog post on how to make social media management easy, which will help you set up and establish a solid social media strategy.

Is Your Branding Consistent?

Your branding needs to be consistent. From every piece of marketing material you send out, to how you present yourself at networking events, you need to be delivering the same message. By not being consistent in your branding, you will be sending out mixed messages, and possibly confusing your potential customers. Branding is much more than your logo and colour scheme, your brand needs to embrace the values your business holds and represent these values in everything you do.

Invest In Advertising

Paid for adsSo far, I have gone over some mostly free marketing tips that you can use to help boost your business, but depending on your budget, you may want to look into paid advertisement. Services such as Google AdWords, or Facebook ads can help drive more traffic to your website by advertising your business to their audience. When using a service like this, you will usually be charged every time someone clicks on your advert. You can however, set daily budgets for this so you don’t end up incurring a huge bill without realizing it. With the budget, paid for advertisements can be one of the most effective marketing activities available to you.
